CONCEPTUAL DEVELOPMENT

This series of workshops will support artists in developing a line of sight for their own individual art practices. Artists will explore conceptual brainstorming, concept mapping, idea generation and look at avenues for artistic inspiration. There will be discussion of Modern Art theory to help contextualise the purpose of the workshop. Artists will have the opportunity to explore one session, or continue for development across a series of consecutive workshops.

The aim of these workshops is to support artists from a broad range of backgrounds, with any artistic discipline and interests, in developing key connectives and links for their bodies of work. Artists from a broad range of artistic merits and experiences are recommended to participate.  Exploration of any individual artistic discipline is also encouraged.

Woven within the workshops will be theory of art and practice.  These are not expected to be ‘expert’ delivered, rather from my personal experience in delivering 24 years of Visual Art in high schools.

TEXTURE PAINTING WITH ACRYLIC SEALER

During this workshop you will learn the skills required to create a unique artwork using acrylic sealer to create a textured surface on which to paint. Due to the time intensive process and the need for drying time this workshop will take place over at least two days. Participants will look at the techniques involved in building up the surface of their canvas to create a contrasting area of texture in the objects and a smooth background space. The workshop will look at identifying shape and form in objects in order to achieve a three dimensional appearance to the works. On the first day participants will be involved in planning, designing and drawing an image onto a canvas and then applying the acrylic sealer with a brush and palette knife to build up its form. The second day will involve priming the textured area and then painting in acrylics or oils over the textured area. Techniques for the background will also be discussed.

LANDSCAPE PAINTING

During this workshop you will learn the skills required to create a unique artwork using oil or acrylic paint. Participants will look at the work of Australian landscape artists, especially Brett Whiteley and gain an understanding of their processes and techniques for landscape painting. The workshop will explore the process of deconstructing the natural environment and selecting its underlying forms, concentrating on the beauty of the curve. Then by exploring a range of painting and mark making techniques produce a unique vision of a chosen landscape.
