MARK PADDICK  VISUAL ARTIST

SOLO EXHIBITIONS

I have always found myself torn between two opposing forces, the pessimist who tends to dominate my personality and the optimist hidden beneath looking for a way to escape. I am essentially the shy, quiet artist often afraid of recognition and praise with a hidden desire to be the centre of attention. The anxiety created by this way of thinking has become the inspiration behind my art making.

My work revolves around this central idea of duality- what I am versus who I want to be. In my use of imagery and in my choice of materials the works I produce reflects the contradiction of my personality. Old versus new, beauty and decay, hard and soft, textured and smooth all appear in my art making. Like my personality this struggle is not one that is displayed for all to see but rather hidden behind a sense of the everyday. The images explored in my painting further reflect this contradiction. These are often images of beauty and simplicity that I am exposed to in my daily life. Water, a bird, a flower or a child at play have all been used in my art making. However like my personality, the simplicity on the surface hides an undercurrent of confusion.
