ANXIETY SERIES  2010/11

This series of works explore anxiety through spontaneous art making. Originally used as a teaching tool with senior art students, each work is inspired by a lyric that the student identified with. SELF PORTRAITS WITH NIRVANA LYRICS  2002

This series of works explore anxiety through graphic imagery and the text of song lyrics. Originally a part of the “When you’re five “exhibition these works use the lyrics of Nirvana songs to represent a state of mind of the artist at the point of creation. Created on Perspex each work presents the crisp finished imagery on one side and the messy early mark making on the other. This concept explores the notion that what we show on the surface hides something far less refined

THE FIGURE  - U TSU KU SHI

A reading from the book of Genesis evokes a thought, questioning our perception of beauty and of its creation. The beautiful is seen in everything but it is in the female form that we find it in its purest form. Yet it is not the breast, or the thigh or a representation of society’s values. The female form has an inherent beauty, which is reflected in the natural environment, evoking the question; whose rib was taken from whom?

This collection of works depicts a creative journey; a series of images that guides the viewer along a pathway of discovery, from the initial form, through abstraction to reinvention. The underlying theme is the undeniable link between the female form and the land. If one deconstructs her recognisable form the beauty reappears in the curves of the landscape. Explore the contours of this landscape and her shape reappears.

The connection between the two is the basis of U Tsu Ku Shi, the creation of beauty.
