"CURIOUSITIES"  ART AND SOUL GALLERY   BOONAH QUEENSLAND  2012

In “Curiosities” I have returned to birds as symbols of freedom, for their inquisitive nature and their desire to search and learn. In these works the birds represent me, the hidden optimist, desiring the new, exploring the world without burden, curious to what fate has planned for me. However despite the urge for risk I am trapped by the fear of change. The decaying past, although no longer important, has a hold over me. This is referenced by the beauty and vibrancy of the birds presented against the decayed history of the signs.

"WATER:THE UNIVERSAL SOURCE OF LIFE"  BONDI PAVILION  2011

In exploring ideas for this body of work I found myself returning to a fundamental element of life. Water has always played a significant part in my life, its qualities mirroring my own anxieties. Water has the ability to calm, and relax the soul while also possessing an incredible destructive power. It is this duality that underlies the exhibition. It was important for the works to represent the tranquility of water; to capture its ability to draw one into its beauty. Lush colour, movement and freedom were key features of the concept. I aimed to create an image that would invite the viewer into the work and become lost in the sensation.

I believe that for a work of art to engage the viewer it requires a push and pull of imagery or a contradiction of ideas. To recognise the beauty of water one needs to be confronted with its opposing force. In creating this exhibition I wanted to present an element that contrasted the elegance and freedom of the water.

"HERON ISLAND ARTISTS RETREAT  HERON ISLAND GALLERY 2001

The Heron Island Exhibition was a project that immersed artists from the Gladstone region into the beauty of Heron Island for three days with the opportunity to explore all aspects of life on the tropical island. Then using this experience each artist was to create a body of work in the following eight weeks inspired by their time on the island.

I approached the exhibition from the viewpoint that this island, its serenity and its peacefulness was in stark contrast to life on the main land only a short distance away. These works were to represent life without menace without disruption and without the constant noise of the industry we had just left. An exhibition of simple moments.

"INDUSTRIALLY INSPIRED" GLADSTONE REGIONAL ART GALLERY 2000

An exhibition and workshop organised by Gladstone Regional Art Gallery in which local visual artists were immersed in the industry in the Gladstone region over the course of several days. The artists were then to use this experience as inspiration for a collective exhibition at the gallery. My aim was to remove the immensity and imposing nature of the structures and recreate them with an organic sensation.
